Appropriately nicknamed The Empire State of the South for its industrial and economic growth in the mid 19th century, America's 13th colony has been a Southern powerhouse for over 200 years. Georgia's most highly controversial state flag was introduced in 1956 by Democratic Party Leader John Sammons Bell. The flag was largely viewed as a way to commemorate the upcoming centennial of the Civil War. The Rebel stars and bars took up two thirds of the new Georgia flag, and as Representative Denmark Groover said, the new flag "will show that we in Georgia intend to uphold what we stood for, will stand for and will fight for."
