"Indian Peace" flag of 1803 - The U.S. government often presented the Stars and Stripes to friendly Indian nations. These "Indian Peace" flags displayed the U.S. Coat of Arms in the canton.

One unusual variation of the U.S. flag was a 26 star flag carried by western explorer John C. Frémont, who later became the first Republican candidate for President. Between the rows of stars in the canton of his flag was an eagle. The eagle held the usual arrows of war, but the olive branch of peace was replaced by the calumet, or peace pipe. He hoped that this would be accepted by the Indians he met in his travels as a token of his peaceful intentions.

Great fit, interesting narrative

When I saw this image I knew I had to have it, not because of the imagery but for the fact you do not see these flags anywhere; the Indian Peace Flag. As a student of history I tossed around the portrayal vs significance with this image: On one hand you have an ironic flag; a meaning of 'peaceful intentions' of interacting nations as our young one was branching out and depending on positive interactions, teachings, and cooperation with the mighty Native Americans. However, as we all know, most instances ultimately ended with forceful removal, negated contracts, and deadly encounters that would lead anyone to scoff at the idea of a peace-flag. And I get that. BUT if no one saw this shirt, no one saw this flag, then all the narratives (good and bad) of the Native Americans would never be, and slowly become isolated on history pages. This shirt give me a chance to show a time in our early developing nation and how our interaction with Native Americans were important, sought after, and dependent on becoming the United States, and the narrative of the Native Americans themselves, the good and bad.
