Originally was a gift to celebrate abolition in the US. Because it is so thin, it sways in the wind, up to 5 inches in heavy wind! The statue was administered by the United States Lighthouse Board until 1901 and then by the Department of War; since 1933 it has been maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, and is a major tourist attraction.
